Red Copper Hybrid Still: A Working Still for Small Distilleries
We build this still for operators who need one kettle to handle stripping runs and spirit runs without buying two machines. Stainless 304 boiler, red copper in the vapor path. That split is deliberate.
Where copper earns its place
Column, lyne arm, condenser. Copper reacts with sulfur compounds in the vapor and keeps them out of the distillate, which shows up fast on grain and molasses washes. We don\’t copper-line the whole boiler — it dents, it needs repassivation, and replacing a copper shell costs more than most small distilleries want to spend.
Choosing a size
200L and 300L are what taprooms and farm distilleries order most. A 200L charge of 8–10% wash covers a weekend run; 300L lets you push two batches a week without living in the still house. At 500L you\’re usually bottling for regional retail. 1000L changes the building — 3-phase power, a steam boiler, floor drains, and a ceiling that clears the column during assembly.
Electric or steam
Electric elements are the easy answer under 500L: no boiler, no steam piping. Above that, direct electric heating gets costly to run and slow to ramp. Steam jackets give faster heat-up and gentler control on grain mashes, but they add a boiler, water treatment, and a licensed install in most places. Settle this before anything else; it moves your quote more than any other option.
Options that come up on every order
Gin basket in the column, agitator for thick washes, condenser type. Shell-and-tube condensers knock vapor down fast but drink cooling water. Worm condensers are forgiving and take floor space. We ask about your cooling water temperature and flow before recommending either.
Before you ask for pricing
Send batch size, wash ABV, target proof, available power, ceiling height, and whether steam is on site. That\’s enough to size the still and quote it without three rounds of email.
