We build these copper reflux columns in our own shop, and most of them leave the floor headed to small gin houses and vodka producers who have outgrown a pot still. If you\’re comparing the units listed online, the differences that matter are column diameter, packing, and where copper actually touches vapor.
Where copper earns its place
Full copper construction isn\’t necessary. Copper contact matters at the column packing, the gin basket, and the vapor path above the boiler. Our default is a copper column on a stainless boiler shell, which holds cost down and still gives the flavor profile most distillers are after.
Size and heating
A 200L or 300L unit suits a 50–150 bottle/day gin or vodka operation. 500L is the common step-up for a craft distillery running two or three runs a week. At 1000L you\’re usually on steam. Electric immersion elements are simpler — 480V three-phase, no boiler permit — but element scaling on hard water is a real maintenance line item. Jacketed steam at 3–5 bar heats more gently and holds reflux steadier, which shows up in your cuts.
Options to order up front
Copper lift-out gin basket, bubble plates, extra packed sections, CIP spray ball, and a shell-and-tube condenser sized to your cooling water temperature. Adding a gin basket after build costs more than ordering it now. Send us your ceiling height and door width too — a 500L column assembly rarely ships upright.

Tell us capacity, charge type (gin, vodka, whiskey), runs per week, available power or steam pressure, cooling water temp, and room dimensions. That\’s enough for us to spec column diameter and packing.
