Description

A 1500 L fermenter works out to roughly 12.8 US barrels. That puts it in the range where a small winery handles one varietal lot at a time, or where a larger producer runs trial fermentations before committing a full blend. Buyers at this size usually already own a glycol chiller, so jacket area and port placement decide whether the tank drops into their existing loop or forces a redesign.

We build the body from 304 stainless as standard: 3 mm shell, 2 mm dished ends, TIG welded with argon back-purge on every product-contact seam. Interior welds are ground flush, then the vessel is pickled and passivated. Fermenting high-acid must, or operating near coastal air, is where 316L earns its upcharge on the shell and cone. Interior finish ranges from 2B mill to a 0.4 µm mirror polish. For most wine work a clean 2B interior is sufficient; mirror polishing mainly pays off when you are fighting red pigment and tartrate adhesion.

Cooling comes from a dimpled jacket on the cone and lower cylinder. We size that area against your target crash-cooling rate, not tank volume alone, because a 1500 L tank asked to fall 20 °C overnight needs more surface than one held steady at 18 °C. Glycol ports are 1.5 in tri-clamp with an internal baffle to prevent short-circuiting.

Standard fittings include a 60° conical bottom with 2 in butterfly valve and racking arm, 1.5 in CIP spray ball, sample valve, 1.5 in pressure-vacuum relief, and a top manway sized for someone in work gear.

Questions we get before quoting

Is the cone necessary? For red wine and any lot where you rack off gross lees, yes. A flat bottom costs less but you lose clean separation.

How does CIP work here? The spray ball covers the upper shell; the cone and outlet need a separate flush cycle, which is why we place the racking arm above the cone weld.

What pressure is safe? The relief valve setting defines your ceiling, not the tank wall. Never cap the relief to hold pressure during a stuck fermentation.

Tell us your batch size, wine type, number of fermentation tanks and available space. We can recommend the tank volume, cooling area and configuration for your winery.

Customer Review

We have been using this still for a few batches now making whiskey, gin and a few other spirits and we are very happy with the results so far. The gear works well and gives good control during distillation. The spirit comes out clean and consistent from batch to batch and we have gotten the flavor profile we were looking for. It has also been easy to operate and maintain. It has been a great addition to our distillery and I’d definitely recommend it to other craft distillers looking for reliable equipment.”
