Description

Where a 2500L open top tank earns its place

At working level this tank holds roughly 2,000–2,200 L of must, which leaves enough headspace for a hard cap and room to punch down by hand or with a pneumatic punch-down tool. That volume fits a single parcel pick, a trial blend, or a small-lot program where the winemaker wants direct access to the cap instead of pumping over a closed vessel.

The forklift slots are the second thing most buyers ask about. They let one operator move an empty tank across a crush pad or onto a truck without a crane. Loaded tanks should never be lifted this way — the slots are sized for the empty shell and its fittings, and we mark the rated lifting points on the frame so cellar staff do not guess.

Material and fabrication choices

Shell and bottom are normally 304 stainless at 2.5–3 mm. We move to 316L when the tank will see aggressive chloride cleaning or coastal cellar air. Interior welds are ground flush and passivated. Standard interior finish is 2B, with an optional mirror polish on the lower third where lees settle and cleaning is hardest. Outlet height, racking arm angle, sample valve, and thermowell position follow your drainage layout rather than a fixed catalog pattern.

Questions we get before quoting

Can it hold pressure?

No. An open top tank is atmospheric. If you need sparging or pressure transfer, you want a closed tank with a conical bottom and a rated relief valve.

How do I control temperature?

Most cellars hang a stainless cooling plate from the rim and run glycol through it, or order a dimple jacket on the lower shell. Plate cooling is cheaper to retrofit; jacket cooling gives more even extraction and faster crash cooling.

Is CIP possible?

Partly. An open top lets you clean manually with caustic and a soft brush, and an optional spray ball handles the walls. The cap ring and rim always need hand work.

Send us your batch size, must temperature target, available floor space, and how you plan to move the tank. We will confirm volume, wall thickness, cooling surface, and fitting layout before anything goes to the shop.

Customer Review

We have been using this still for a few batches now making whiskey, gin and a few other spirits and we are very happy with the results so far. The gear works well and gives good control during distillation. The spirit comes out clean and consistent from batch to batch and we have gotten the flavor profile we were looking for. It has also been easy to operate and maintain. It has been a great addition to our distillery and I’d definitely recommend it to other craft distillers looking for reliable equipment.”
