Description

Variable capacity tanks earn their place in cellars running many small lots. The floating lid rests directly on the wine surface, so headspace collapses as volume drops and nobody spends Friday topping up with wine and SO2. At 5,000 L the vessel suits a mid-size lot, a blend component, or a holding tank between press and barrel.

How we build it

Standard shells are 3 mm SUS304 with a dished bottom, argon-purged welds, and a 2B internal finish. We move to 316L when process water runs high in chloride or the lot sees aggressive cleaning chemistry. Every seam is ground, brushed, and passivated before shipping. Exterior is satin brushed by default; mirror polish only pays off if the tank stands in a tasting room.

The floating lid is 2 mm 304 with a food-grade inflatable gasket, pumped up through a valve to lock against the shell wall. We cut lid diameter to your tank\’s measured internal dimension rather than a nominal figure — a 3-5 mm rolling tolerance is enough to leak air. Standard fittings: 400 mm top manway, 2 in. racking outlet, sample valve, ladder hooks. DIN or TC connections, dimple cooling jackets, and forklift pockets are options.

Questions buyers ask us

Jacket or no jacket? A variable capacity tank is usually a storage vessel. If the same tank must ferment, order a dimple jacket and insulation; a lid alone will not hold temperature.

Does the lid hold a CO2 blanket? Yes, when the gasket is inflated to roughly 0.2-0.3 bar. Over-inflation distorts the tube and shortens its life.

Cleaning? The lid comes out through the manway for manual cleaning; spray ball retrofits are possible but need a pump and drain sized for the tank height.

Can it be stacked or moved? Empty, with forklift pockets. Never lift a full 5,000 L tank by the shell — use the designated lifting points.

Lead time and paperwork? Typically 25-35 days plus shipping, with material certs and test reports for customs and insurance.

Before you ask for a price

Send us the wine type, lot size, whether the tank ferments or stores, available ceiling height, door width, and the fittings you already use in the cellar. That is enough to fix volume, cooling area, lid type, and connection standard without a second round of emails. Tell us your batch size, wine style, number of tanks and available space — we can recommend the tank volume, cooling area and configuration for your winery.

Customer Review

We have been using this still for a few batches now making whiskey, gin and a few other spirits and we are very happy with the results so far. The gear works well and gives good control during distillation. The spirit comes out clean and consistent from batch to batch and we have gotten the flavor profile we were looking for. It has also been easy to operate and maintain. It has been a great addition to our distillery and I’d definitely recommend it to other craft distillers looking for reliable equipment.”
