Description
What this tank is for
A floating lid tank lets you store a variable volume of wine without headspace. The lid rests on the wine surface and rises or falls as you top up or draw off. For a winery running small lots, that is often cheaper than owning three fixed-volume tanks. The lid is a barrier, not a pressure closure — keep that in mind when you plan racking and pump-over routines.
Material and fabrication
We build these in 304 or 316L. Grade 304 covers most red and white must. Step up to 316L when you handle high-acid juice, extended skin contact, or when your sanitation program runs hotter caustic and acid cycles.
Sheet runs 2 mm through the 1000–2000 L sizes, 3 mm from 3000 L up. Internal welds are ground flush and passivated. The wine side is finished 2B or #4, depending on how much visual inspection you want to do. Lid gaskets are food-grade EPDM or silicone; an inflatable tube seal is available when the lid has to hold a firmer seal for long storage.
Ports and connections
Standard build: bottom outlet in DIN or tri-clamp, racking valve, sample valve, thermowell, and a manway on the lid. On jacketed units the dimple plate is welded before insulation and cladding — that order matters if a jacket ever needs repair.
Picking a volume
Plan on 80–85% fill. A 1000 L tank holds roughly 850 L of usable wine, which suits a small lot or a trial blend. The 3000 L and 5000 L sizes fit commercial cellars where you are consolidating barrels. Measure your door width and ceiling height before ordering; a 5000 L tank on legs is not a unit you move after installation.
Do I need a cooling jacket on a storage tank?
Only if the tank sits in a warm room or holds wine through a hot month. In a cellar that stays under 18°C, an unjacketed tank with a floating lid usually does the job.
Can I ferment in one?
Yes, but pull the lid during active fermentation and put it back after pressing. Sealing a tank mid-ferment traps CO2 and gets dangerous.
How is it cleaned?
A spray ball mounted in the lid handles most of it. The underside of the lid and the gasket channel still need manual attention, because that is where residue collects.
Tell us your batch size, wine type, number of tanks and available space. We can recommend the tank volume, lid seal type and port layout for your cellar.

We have been using this still for a few batches now making whiskey, gin and a few other spirits and we are very happy with the results so far. The gear works well and gives good control during distillation. The spirit comes out clean and consistent from batch to batch and we have gotten the flavor profile we were looking for. It has also been easy to operate and maintain. It has been a great addition to our distillery and I’d definitely recommend it to other craft distillers looking for reliable equipment.”
