We build these copper pot stills in our own shop, so what you see in the photos is what leaves the floor: 3–4 mm copper on the pot body, stainless where copper isn\’t doing any real work.
Where the copper actually needs to be
Copper contact matters in three places — the pot, the lyne arm, and the condenser. That\’s where sulfur compounds and heavier fatty acids get scrubbed out. A copper onion sitting on a stainless column does work, but you lose contact area, and we\’ll tell you that before the order is placed rather than after.
Heating usually decides the footprint. Electric immersion elements fit 100–500 L units in buildings with no boiler. Steam jackets make more sense at 1,000 L and up, or if you already run steam for mashing. Direct fire is the cheapest to buy and the most work to live with.
Sizing, options, and what to send us
Capacity is a production question, not a budget one. A 200 L still suits a small distillery doing limited releases. 300–500 L is where most whisky and brandy houses land when they run stripping runs most days. 1,000 L and above is for continuous production with a shift team.
Options we install most often: a gin basket in the vapor path, an agitator for grain-in washes, a reflux column section, and either a shell-and-tube or worm condenser. Give us your target ABV off the still and we size the condenser to match.
Before quoting, send batch volume, target proof, available heat source, ceiling height, floor loading, and the receiving port. That\’s enough for us to spec a still without a second round of emails.
