Description

5000L Floating Lid Wine Tank

This 5000L (5,000-liter) floating lid tank is built for wineries that need reliable protection against oxidation during fermentation and storage. The floating lid sits directly on the wine surface, sealing off headspace and limiting oxygen contact. That matters most after primary fermentation, when dissolved oxygen pickup can flatten aromatics and shift color.

Construction and Materials

We fabricate this tank from SUS304 stainless steel as standard, with 316L available for higher chloride exposure or more aggressive cleaning chemicals. The shell and bottom are welded with full penetration on critical seams, then ground and polished. Internal surfaces reach Ra ≤ 0.8 µm; external surfaces are brushed or mirror polished depending on your cellar aesthetic. The floating lid uses food-grade EPDM or silicone gaskets, sized to the tank diameter and clamped evenly to maintain a consistent seal.

Applications and Practical Notes

Wineries, micro-wineries, and contract bottling operations use floating lid tanks for red and white varietals, especially small-lot wines where variable capacity is useful. The lid adjusts to any fill level, so you can ferment 3,000 L in a 5,000 L tank without excessive headspace. A 1.5-inch racking port, sample valve, and CIP spray ball are typical. For temperature-sensitive fermentations, we can add a dimpled cooling jacket and insulation. If you connect a glycol system, confirm jacket pressure ratings and install a pressure relief valve — never rely on a single valve for overpressure protection.

FAQ

What is the tank used for? Fermentation and storage of wine, with the floating lid limiting oxygen contact after active fermentation.

Why control temperature? Yeast activity and extraction rates shift with temperature; cooling jackets help hold a consistent profile.

How do I size the tank? Match nominal volume to your largest batch, but consider that variable capacity suits smaller lots.

Can I CIP it? Yes, with a spray ball and compatible cleaning chemicals. Confirm chemical compatibility with your stainless grade.

We have been using this still for a few batches now making whiskey, gin and a few other spirits and we are very happy with the results so far. The gear works well and gives good control during distillation. The spirit comes out clean and consistent from batch to batch and we have gotten the flavor profile we were looking for. It has also been easy to operate and maintain. It has been a great addition to our distillery and I’d definitely recommend it to other craft distillers looking for reliable equipment.”
