Description

What a 1500 L brewhouse is actually expected to do

A 15 BBL (15 HL) system sits in the middle of the craft range: enough to feed a taproom and one or two distribution accounts, small enough for one operator to run two or three turns a day. Most inquiries at this size come from breweries that have outgrown a 5–7 BBL kit and are tired of double-batching every recipe. A typical line covers a mash/lauter tun, kettle/whirlpool, hot liquor tank, plate chiller and a matched set of unitanks.

Fabrication details that matter later

Shell and dish heads are 3 mm SUS304 as standard. We switch the kettle to SUS316L when the water is high in chloride or the brewery plans sour or barrel programs. Interior welds are ground, pickled and passivated, then polished to Ra ≤ 0.6 µm on product-contact surfaces. Exterior finish is brushed unless mirror is requested — brushed hides handling marks in a working brewhouse. Gaskets are EPDM or silicone, and every product connection is tri-clamp so spares stay available locally.

Cooling jackets are dimpled and cover the cone plus the lower shell. On a 15 BBL tank, that surface area is what keeps a lager ferment from stalling during active primary. Working pressure is normally 0.2–0.3 MPa with a matched relief valve — never size the valve by tank volume alone, size it by the largest pressure source connected.

Where this size fits

Brewpubs with 6–10 unitanks, contract brewers running short runs, and beverage producers doing kombucha or RTD bases on the same skid. Cider and mead makers usually want a narrower cone angle and slower knockout.

Questions we get before quoting

Can a 1500 L kettle handle high-gravity batches? Yes, but plan headspace and HLT volume for it from the start; retrofitting is expensive.

Do I need a separate whirlpool? For hop-forward recipes with heavy kettle loads, a dedicated whirlpool vessel gives cleaner trub separation and faster turnarounds.

How much glycol? Budget roughly 1.5–2 kW of chiller capacity per 15 BBL tank during crash cooling, and insulate the headers.

Tell us your batch size, beer type, number of fermentation tanks and available space. We can recommend the tank volume, cooling area and configuration for your brewery.

Customer Review

We have been using this still for a few batches now making whiskey, gin and a few other spirits and we are very happy with the results so far. The gear works well and gives good control during distillation. The spirit comes out clean and consistent from batch to batch and we have gotten the flavor profile we were looking for. It has also been easy to operate and maintain. It has been a great addition to our distillery and I’d definitely recommend it to other craft distillers looking for reliable equipment.”
