Description
A 20BBL unitank is not a one-size-fits-all vessel. It is a pressure-rated, temperature-controlled fermentation tank that has to match your brewhouse output, your beer styles, and your available floor space. For most craft breweries, 20BBL is the sweet spot between small-batch flexibility and production efficiency.
We build this tank with SUS304 stainless steel as standard. The shell and cone are typically 3mm thick, with a 2B mill finish on the exterior and a pickled and passivated interior. Where the beer contacts the surface, we polish to Ra ≤ 0.8μm, then passivate to restore the chromium oxide layer. welds are full-penetration TIG, ground and polished flush. No crevices, no sugar traps.
The cone angle matters. A 60-degree cone is standard for yeast settlement and trub removal. If you are brewing heavily dry-hopped beers, a steeper cone helps, but a 60-degree cone with a 2-inch bottom outlet and a rotating racking arm gives you enough control for most ales and lagers.
The glycol cooling jacket is where the tank earns its keep. We use dimple jackets on the cone and lower cylinder, with separate zones if you need precise temperature ramping. The jacket is rated for 0.3MPa working pressure and connects to 1.5-inch tri-clamp fittings. Insulation is 80mm polyurethane, covered with a stainless steel cladding. This keeps condensation down and glycol consumption reasonable, even in warm climates.
Working pressure for the tank itself is 0.2MPa (approximately 2 bar) for fermentation and up to 0.3MPa for carbonation. Every unit ships with a pressure relief valve, a CIP spray ball, a sample valve, and a dry-hop port. The top manway is 400mm, sized for dry hopping and inspection without breaking your back.
For CIP, we recommend a separate CIP skid, but the tank\’s spray ball is designed for 360-degree coverage. You will need to verify flow rate and pressure at the inlet. A common mistake is undersizing the CIP pump for a 20BBL tank. We can advise on connection sizes and pump curves.
Small brewpubs often choose 20BBL tanks for core beers, then use 10BBL tanks for seasonals. commercial breweries might use 20BBL as pilot batches before scaling to 60BBL. The difference is not just volume. It is the cooling load, the floor loading, and the ceiling height for dry hopping.
If you are ready to specify, tell us your batch size, beer type, number of fermentation tanks and available space. We can recommend the tank volume, cooling area and configuration for your brewery.

We have been using this still for a few batches now making whiskey, gin and a few other spirits and we are very happy with the results so far. The gear works well and gives good control during distillation. The spirit comes out clean and consistent from batch to batch and we have gotten the flavor profile we were looking for. It has also been easy to operate and maintain. It has been a great addition to our distillery and I’d definitely recommend it to other craft distillers looking for reliable equipment.”
