Description

Horizontal fermentation tanks make sense when your cellar has limited headroom or when you want more working volume without a taller vessel. We build these 1000L–5000L units for ale and lager fermentation, conditioning, bright beer storage, and yeast propagation in craft breweries, cider houses, and beverage plants.

Shell material is normally SUS304, 3 mm plate with 3 mm dished ends. Breweries running acidic fruit bases or chloride-based cleaning chemicals usually move to 316L on product contact surfaces. Both grades are TIG welded with argon back purge, then ground, pickled, and passivated. Internal finish runs 0.4–0.6 µm Ra; a rougher finish holds soil and stretches CIP cycles longer than necessary.

Cooling comes from a dimple or channel jacket on the cylindrical body, designed for 2 bar working pressure with glycol at -4°C to 2°C. Jacket area is matched to batch volume — a 5000L tank with a jacket sized for 2000L takes too long to crash cool and adds load to your glycol chiller. Insulation is 50 mm polyurethane under 304 stainless cladding.

Standard ports include a top manway, CIP spray ball, pressure relief valve, CO2 blow-off, sample valve, racking arm, and dry hop port. Tri-clamp connections keep sanitation simple and let you swap fittings without welding.

One note on geometry. Horizontal tanks drain through the lowest point of the dished end, and yeast dumping is less effective than on a vertical cone-bottom tank. Use them for conditioning and storage, or where ceiling height rules out a vertical vessel.

Common Questions

What pressure do these tanks hold? Shell design is 2 bar, hydro-tested at 3 bar. The relief valve is set to match, so never cap or plug the blow-off line.

Do I need a cone bottom instead? Vertical cone tanks drop yeast faster. Pick horizontal when height is the constraint or when the tank is mostly for conditioning and storage.

How does CIP work here? A rotating spray ball at the top, a pump with caustic and acid cycles, and a drain at the low point. Polished surfaces and sanitary welds are what make the cycle short.

Can I carbonate in the tank? Yes, with a carbonation stone and a pressure-rated vessel. Confirm the pressure rating before you plan carbonation.

Tell us your batch size, beer type, number of fermentation tanks and available space. We can recommend the tank volume, cooling area and configuration for your brewery.

Customer Review

We have been using this still for a few batches now making whiskey, gin and a few other spirits and we are very happy with the results so far. The gear works well and gives good control during distillation. The spirit comes out clean and consistent from batch to batch and we have gotten the flavor profile we were looking for. It has also been easy to operate and maintain. It has been a great addition to our distillery and I’d definitely recommend it to other craft distillers looking for reliable equipment.”
