Description

6BBL Conical Fermenter: Built for Real Brewery Work

A 6BBL fermenter sits in a practical middle ground. It\’s large enough to support a small commercial brewery or a busy brewpub, yet compact enough to fit into buildings that weren\’t designed around tanks. Most buyers searching for this size are past the homebrew stage—they\’re dealing with production schedules, yeast management, and tank cleaning as recurring operational tasks, not occasional chores.

What This Tank Actually Does

This is a unitank. It handles fermentation and conditioning in one vessel, which reduces transfers and oxygen pickup. The 60-degree conical bottom lets yeast and trub settle into a narrow collection point, so you can drop yeast through the bottom port without disturbing the beer above. That geometry matters more as batch size grows—at 6BBL, a shallow cone means you\’re losing beer or dragging yeast back into suspension every time you try to harvest.

Materials and Construction

We build these in SUS304 as standard. SUS316L is available for brewers working with high-adjunct grists or aggressive cleaning regimes, though for most ales and lagers 304 holds up well. The shell and cone are welded with full-penetration TIG passes, then pickled and passivated. Interior welds are ground flush and polished to a sanitary finish—typically under 0.8µm Ra on wetted surfaces. Exterior finish is usually a brushed #4, which hides fingerprints and scuffs in a working cellar.

Cooling is handled by a dimpled jacket on the cone and lower cylinder. That placement targets the active fermentation zone, where heat generation is highest. The jacket is rated for glycol service, and we pressure-test every unit before it leaves the shop.

Practical Details That Affect Daily Use

The top manway should be large enough to climb through for inspection but small enough to seal reliably. We use a clamp-style or bolted manway depending on the pressure rating you need. Working pressure is typically 15 psi, though we can build to 30 psi if you plan to carbonate in the tank. A pressure relief valve is sized to the tank volume and set below the shell rating—never above it.

CIP is straightforward: a rotating spray ball in the dome connects to your pump and caustic loop. The racking arm, sample valve, and dry-hop port are all accessible from the front. We position them so one person can operate the tank without walking around it.

Where It Fits

This size works well for brewpubs serving 4–8 taps, small production breweries doing limited distribution, and contract brewing setups where floor space is tight. If you\’re planning to double-batch into a 12BBL fermenter later, a 6BBL unitank lets you test recipes without committing a full production run.

Common Questions

Why control temperature on a 6BBL tank? At this volume, fermentation generates enough heat to push you past target by 5–10°F if unchecked. Glycol jackets let you hold lager temps and crash cool without moving the beer.

Do I need a conical bottom? If you\’re cropping yeast or dry hopping, yes. A flat-bottom tank forces you to rack off the top and leaves more beer behind.

Can I carbonate in the fermenter? Yes, if you specify the higher pressure rating and a PRV set accordingly. Otherwise, plan to transfer to a brite tank.

Tell us your batch size, beer type, number of fermentation tanks and available space. We can recommend the tank volume, cooling area and configuration for your brewery.

Customer Review

We have been using this still for a few batches now making whiskey, gin and a few other spirits and we are very happy with the results so far. The gear works well and gives good control during distillation. The spirit comes out clean and consistent from batch to batch and we have gotten the flavor profile we were looking for. It has also been easy to operate and maintain. It has been a great addition to our distillery and I’d definitely recommend it to other craft distillers looking for reliable equipment.”
