What a 1,000 L Conical Tank Actually Does in a Brewery

1,000 L lands in a useful middle ground. It fits a modest brewery floor without a crane, yet three or four of them keep a 10–15 bbl brewhouse on a full production schedule. Most units we ship at this size go to production breweries running six to ten batches a week, and to contract brewers who need turnover speed more than they need volume.

Shell, Welds and Surface Finish

Body and cone are 3 mm SUS304 as standard. We move to 316L when the cleaning chemistry is aggressive or when the vessel will double as a bright beer tank. Interior welds are ground flush, the shell is pickled and passivated, and the contact surface is mechanically polished to 0.4–0.6 µm. That finish matters more than it sounds — yeast and hop residue release during CIP instead of baking onto the wall, and your cleaning cycle gets shorter.

Glycol Jackets and Temperature Control

Two or three dimpled jackets — one on the cone, two on the cylindrical wall — give you enough surface area to crash 1,000 L of 12 °P wort at roughly 1 °C per hour with 8 °C glycol. A single wall jacket will not hold a lager schedule. The digital panel reads a PT100 in a mid-tank thermowell and cycles the glycol solenoid against your setpoint. If you run diacetyl rests, ask for a second sensor lower on the cone.

Pressure, CIP and Piping Connections

Working pressure is typically 0.2 MPa, tested at 0.4 MPa, with a mechanical relief valve and a separate vacuum breaker. Do not isolate the CIP arm on a pressurized tank. Cleaning runs through a rotating spray ball mounted on the top manway arm, fed from a 1.5\” TC port; blow-off, racking arm, sample valve and dry hop port sit where your cellar crew expects them.

Questions We Get Before an Order

Do I need 316L? Only if you brew high-acid styles repeatedly or CIP with chlorinated caustic. Standard 304 handles ale and lager production for years.

How many tanks for a 10 bbl brewhouse? Four to six, depending on how many beers you package at once and whether you tank-condition.

Can I carbonate here? Yes, up to about 2.5 volumes with a rated cone and a proper relief valve setting.

What chiller size? Plan on 1.5–2 HP per 1,000 L tank in a warm cellar; we will calculate it against your crash schedule.

Tell us your batch size, beer type, number of fermentation tanks and available space. We can recommend the tank volume, cooling area and configuration for your brewery.

Customer Review

We have been using this still for a few batches now making whiskey, gin and a few other spirits and we are very happy with the results so far. The gear works well and gives good control during distillation. The spirit comes out clean and consistent from batch to batch and we have gotten the flavor profile we were looking for. It has also been easy to operate and maintain. It has been a great addition to our distillery and I’d definitely recommend it to other craft distillers looking for reliable equipment.”
