Description

Where a 1500 L IBC Fermenter Fits

Buyers who land on this size are usually past drums and 300 L conicals but not ready for a cellar full of 10,000 L tanks. A 1500 L IBC keeps a standard pallet footprint, stacks two high when empty, and rolls through a 900 mm doorway — useful when the fermentation room is a converted warehouse bay.

Construction and Materials

The body is 3 mm SUS304 with a 2 mm outer shell, TIG welded and ground flush inside. If you work with high-acid must, heavy sulfite additions, or run hot caustic CIP cycles, we switch the product contact surfaces to 316L. Interiors are pickled, passivated, and polished to Ra ≤ 0.8 µm. A rougher finish traps tartrate and lees, and you feel it at racking time.

A dimple jacket covers the side walls and the dished bottom. For white fermentation at 12–16 °C we normally size 1.8–2.2 m² of cooling area, fed by 30% propylene glycol at −5 °C. Working pressure is 0.2 MPa, hydro-tested at 0.3 MPa, with a spring-loaded relief valve and a breath valve on the top plate. Red fermentations that need 28 °C and a cap punch run on the same jacket, just a warmer glycol setpoint.

Fittings and Cleaning

Standard build: 400 mm hinged manway, rotary CIP spray ball, racking arm, 1.5 in tri-clamp sample valve and drain, DIN 40 or tri-clamp gas ports. Gaskets are EPDM by default, silicone if you steam-sanitize above 120 °C. A full CIP loop — caustic, acid, rinse — typically runs 25–30 minutes at 1.5 bar.

Typical Applications

  • Small wineries fermenting 1–2 ton lots
  • Contract bottlers holding variable-volume blends
  • Cideries, meaderies, and fruit wine producers

FAQ

Do I need 316L for wine?

Usually not. Choose 316L for high-acid fruit, long-held sulfited must, or strong caustic CIP. Otherwise 304 with a proper passivation layer lasts decades.

How many tanks for a 1500 L batch?

Fill to 75–80% on reds to leave room for cap, so a 1500 L tank takes roughly 1200 L of must. Match tank count to your largest single lot, not annual volume.

Can it work as a storage or blending tank?

Yes, with the relief valve fitted and the gas port blanked. Keep the jacket running if you hold wine warm.

What glycol chiller size do I need?

Two 1500 L tanks in active fermentation pull about 3–4 kW. Size the chiller for simultaneous ferment plus crash cooling, not average load.

Send us your batch size, wine type, tank quantity, and room dimensions. We will come back with tank volume, cooling area, and port layout for your cellar.

We have been using this still for a few batches now making whiskey, gin and a few other spirits and we are very happy with the results so far. The gear works well and gives good control during distillation. The spirit comes out clean and consistent from batch to batch and we have gotten the flavor profile we were looking for. It has also been easy to operate and maintain. It has been a great addition to our distillery and I’d definitely recommend it to other craft distillers looking for reliable equipment.”
