Description

What a 1500L tank actually has to do

Most wineries ordering this size are working 5 to 15 tons of fruit a season across several lots. The tank has to hold temperature through the violent part of fermentation, then come down quickly for cold soak or a stabilization rest. A dimple jacket covering roughly 65 percent of the shell, fed with glycol at -5 to 5°C, holds red must at 25–28°C during peak fermentation and pulls a 1500L lot down overnight when you need it.

Red wine also means cap management. We normally build this tank with a sloped bottom, a hinged side must door wide enough to shovel pomace through, and a racking port set above the lees line. If you plan to press straight from the tank, tell us early — the door frame, reinforcing rings and bottom slope all change.

Materials and fabrication

Inner shell 3 mm SUS304, 1.5 mm dimple jacket, 80 mm polyurethane insulation, 2 mm outer shell. We move to 316L when the fruit is high-acid or the cleaning regime is aggressive. Dimples are spot-welded and the jacket is hydro-tested at 0.4 MPa before insulation goes in; working pressure stays around 0.3 MPa. Interior welds are ground flush, passivated and polished to Ra ≤ 0.8 µm in the wetted area. Exterior finish is 2B or brushed No. 4, your call.

Parameter Specification
Working volume 1500 L (approx. 396 US gal)
Inner shell SUS304, 3 mm (316L optional)
Dimple jacket 1.5 mm, 0.3 MPa working, glycol or chilled water
Insulation / outer shell 80 mm PU foam / 2 mm SUS304
Surface finish Interior Ra ≤ 0.8 µm, exterior 2B or No. 4 brushed
Connections 2 in. tri-clamp CIP spray ball, racking arm, sample valve, 1.5 in. drain
Relief Pressure/vacuum relief valve, 0.2 MPa set

Questions we get before quoting

Jacket or external plate cooler? At 1500L a dimple jacket is usually cheaper to install and takes no extra floor space. Plate coolers make more sense when you are retrofitting existing tanks or need very fast pull-down on large volumes.

Why a vacuum relief valve? The tank runs near atmospheric pressure. If a fermentation lock plugs, or cold crashing and CIP pull a vacuum, that valve is what keeps the shell from deforming.

How does cleaning work? A 2 in. spray ball in the top manway covers the shell. The must door and racking arm come apart without tools, and undersized drains slow pomace slurry badly — keep the drain at 1.5 in. minimum.

Tell us your batch size, fruit type, number of tanks and available floor space. We can recommend the tank volume, cooling area and configuration for your winery.

Customer Review

We have been using this still for a few batches now making whiskey, gin and a few other spirits and we are very happy with the results so far. The gear works well and gives good control during distillation. The spirit comes out clean and consistent from batch to batch and we have gotten the flavor profile we were looking for. It has also been easy to operate and maintain. It has been a great addition to our distillery and I’d definitely recommend it to other craft distillers looking for reliable equipment.”
