What a 6BBL System Actually Has to Do

A 6BBL brewhouse sits in an awkward but useful spot. It is large enough that a brew day produces real volume — about 186 US gallons per turn — and small enough that two people can run it without a full-time cellar crew. Most systems we build at this size go to brewpubs, taproom breweries, and contract producers running four to twelve batches a week.

The fermenter is where the design decisions get made. Vessel geometry, jacket coverage, and pressure rating all follow from the beer you intend to make, not from a catalog page.

Vessel Construction

We build these tanks in SUS304 as standard, with 316L available for brewers working with high-acid fruit additions or aggressive CIP chemistry. Inner shell 3mm, outer cladding 2mm, polyurethane insulation between. Welds are TIG, ground and passivated on the product side. The interior gets a 2B finish, or a mirror polish if you run heavily hopped styles where biofilm hides in surface scratches.

Dished top with a 400mm manway, 60-degree cone bottom, shadowless side manway on request. Cone angle matters more than people expect: a 60-degree cone drains trub cleanly, a shallower cone leaves yeast stuck on the slope.

Cooling and Pressure

Dimple jackets cover the cone and lower cylinder. Glycol at 28–30°F through a 2-inch inlet holds a 6BBL batch at lager temperature through active fermentation. Working pressure is 15 psi, hydro-tested at 30 psi; the relief valve and racking arm are sized to match. If you plan to carbonate in the tank rather than in a brite, tell us early — the rating and valve set change.

Common Questions

Can I ferment and carbonate in one tank? Yes, if the tank is rated for it and you allow enough headspace — roughly 25 percent above the batch volume.

What chiller do I need? For four 6BBL tanks in active fermentation, plan on a 3 to 5 hp glycol unit with a 100-gallon reservoir.

How is cleaning handled? A rotary spray ball at the top plus a cone drain lets you run a full CIP loop from a single pump and caustic tank.

Tell us your batch size, beer type, number of fermentation tanks and available space. We can recommend the tank volume, cooling area and configuration for your brewery.

Customer Review

We have been using this still for a few batches now making whiskey, gin and a few other spirits and we are very happy with the results so far. The gear works well and gives good control during distillation. The spirit comes out clean and consistent from batch to batch and we have gotten the flavor profile we were looking for. It has also been easy to operate and maintain. It has been a great addition to our distillery and I’d definitely recommend it to other craft distillers looking for reliable equipment.”
