What this column actually is
We build this copper glass distilling column as a modular unit — copper where vapor contact matters, glass where you want to watch the run. Sight glass sections let a distiller see reflux behavior, flooding, and take-off without guessing. Most of the copper glass columns we ship go to beverage and wine distilleries running 8–12 hour batches, plus a few craft shops doing gin or brandy runs on the same column.
Copper contact and glass — where each one earns its place
Copper in the column and vapor path pulls sulfur compounds out of the distillate. On a glass still, the copper has to sit where vapor actually touches it — packing, plates, the lower section, the condenser path. Glass above that is for observation. If a supplier shows you copper only on the outer shell, that is a shell, not a vapor-contact surface.
Glass is fragile. Keep spare sections on the shelf and do not set the column where a pallet jack swings through. Insulating the glass is optional; most shops skip it and accept a little more reflux variation between runs.
Heating and configuration choices
- Electric heating — simpler install, no boiler, higher cost per liter on long runs.
- Steam — cheaper to run at 500 L and up, but you need a boiler and, in some regions, a licensed room.
- Gin basket, agitator, and condenser size are bolt-on decisions. Order them with the column, not six months later.
We watched a 300 L column get sold to a winery that only runs 400 L weeks. Now it fires twice a month. Match the column to your batch schedule, not to the biggest number you can afford.
What to send us before quoting
Product type, batch size in liters, target ABV, heating source, available steam pressure, ceiling height, floor space, and whether the column needs CE or ASME stamping. Drawings usually follow within a few days of receiving those numbers.
