Description

What a 1000L BBT Actually Does on the Floor

Most breweries order a 1000L brite beer tank for one of two reasons: they are moving from keg conditioning to carbonated bright beer, or their current tank cannot hold pressure long enough to carb and serve without foaming. This is an enclosed storage tank with a dimple jacket and a dished or conical bottom, sized for roughly 8–10 barrels of finished beer. We build it as a pressure vessel, not a repurposed fermenter.

Materials, Welding and Finish

Shell and dish ends are 304 stainless as standard. We move to 316L when the same tank sees sours, fruit additions or salted beers, or when local water runs high in chloride. Interior welds are TIG, full penetration, ground flush, pickled and passivated. Product contact surfaces are polished below 0.6 µm Ra so CIP chemistry reaches every seam. Exterior is #4 brushed, or mirror polish when the tank sits in the taproom.

Gaskets are EPDM for standard beer service; silicone suits repeated high-temperature CIP. Manway, sample valve and carbonation stone port are all sanitary clamp connections.

Temperature and Pressure

The jacket covers the lower third to half of the shell. Glycol at 28–30°F holds beer at 33–36°F for carbonation and packaging. Working pressure is normally 15 psi against a 30 psi design rating, and the relief valve setting must never exceed the stamped working pressure on the nameplate. A 1000L tank at 15 psi pushes beer through 10–15 meters of line to a filler or bar without a pump.

Connections and CIP

Standard build: CIP spray ball, racking arm, pressure/vacuum relief, carbonation stone, sample valve and two thermowell ports. Level gauge, dry-hop port or a second cooling zone are available on request.

Parameter Specification
Nominal volume 1000 L (8.5 bbl)
Material SUS304 / SUS316L
Working pressure 15 psi (1 bar)
Design pressure 30 psi (2 bar)
Cooling Dimple jacket, glycol
Bottom Dished or 60° cone
Insulation PU, 80–100 mm

Sizing Notes

Pub breweries running 500–800L batches usually take a conical bottom and a single jacket zone. Production breweries filling kegs or cans want a dish bottom, dual-zone jacket and headspace for 1.5 volumes of CO2 without blowoff. Sizing to your largest batch plus 25% headspace avoids the most common mistake we see: buying a tank that foams over during carbonation.

FAQ

Can it double as a fermenter? It can hold beer under pressure, but without a cone angle and yeast dump port, cropping is impractical. Keep fermentation and bright storage separate.

Is 316L worth the cost? For chloride-rich water or mixed-culture programs, yes. For clean ale and lager production, 304 performs for decades.

How is CIP verified? Spray ball coverage is checked with riboflavin under UV before shipment.

Lead time and shipping? 25–40 days build, shipped with legs or skirt, crated for container loading.

We have been using this still for a few batches now making whiskey, gin and a few other spirits and we are very happy with the results so far. The gear works well and gives good control during distillation. The spirit comes out clean and consistent from batch to batch and we have gotten the flavor profile we were looking for. It has also been easy to operate and maintain. It has been a great addition to our distillery and I’d definitely recommend it to other craft distillers looking for reliable equipment.”
