Description

A 5,000 L tank sits in an awkward spot for most wineries. Big enough that a slow cold crash eats a week of tank time, small enough that people order three or four at once. That is why we build this vessel around a spiral cooling coil instead of a jacket ring on the cone alone.

The inner shell is 3 mm SUS304 as standard, with 316L available when the must runs high in chloride or the tank doubles for cider. Outer shell is 2 mm, and the gap between them is filled with 80 mm of injected polyurethane. Shell seams are TIG welded, internal welds ground flush, then the surface is passivated and polished to 0.4–0.6 µm Ra. A rough finish in a wine tank is not cosmetic — it gives tartrate and lees somewhere to sit.

The coil is welded to the cone and lower body, giving roughly 4.5–6 m² of transfer area depending on how we lay it out. Glycol enters low and exits high, so the coldest metal sits where the solids settle. On a full 5,000 L batch that geometry pulls an active ferment from 24 °C to 8 °C in about 12–16 hours, assuming your chiller is sized for the load and not just the tank count.

Inner vessel working pressure is 0.2 MPa for typical wine orders. We build to 0.3 MPa with a larger relief valve when the tank runs carbonated or pressurized ferments. The relief valve is sized to the gas the ferment can actually produce, not to the tank volume — a distinction that matters more than the pressure rating on the nameplate.

Questions we get before quoting

Red and white in the same tank? Yes, but tell us. Extended maceration changes how we position the racking arm and whether we add a second coil section.

Does it clean itself? No tank does. A rotating spray ball at 2–3 bar with caustic at 60–80 °C handles the body and cone; the coil welds and manway gasket need a manual pass on the schedule you already run.

Can I add a valve later? Weld-in ferrules are cheaper now than cutting a polished shell later. Send us your piping layout with the order.

Tell us your batch size, wine type, number of tanks and available floor space. We can recommend tank volume, cooling area and configuration for your cellar.

Customer Review

We have been using this still for a few batches now making whiskey, gin and a few other spirits and we are very happy with the results so far. The gear works well and gives good control during distillation. The spirit comes out clean and consistent from batch to batch and we have gotten the flavor profile we were looking for. It has also been easy to operate and maintain. It has been a great addition to our distillery and I’d definitely recommend it to other craft distillers looking for reliable equipment.”
