Description

What a 60 to 90 BBL Unitank Is Actually Built For

Most inquiries we get at this size come from breweries stepping up from 20 or 30 BBL batches, or from contract producers who want one vessel to carry a full week of production instead of tying up three smaller tanks. A 60 BBL shell gives you about 1,860 gallons of working volume; a 90 BBL holds roughly 2,790 gallons, both with headspace for krausen and dry hopping.

Standard construction is 304 stainless. If you run kettle sours, fruited beers, or anything with long low-pH contact, we recommend 316L for the cone and lower shell. We have pulled 304 tanks off the line with chloride pitting starting at welds after two years of heavy fruit work; the upgrade costs far less than a replacement cone.

Fabrication Details That Decide Performance

Body plate is 3 mm, cone 4 mm with a 60-degree included angle. Dimple jackets cover the cone and lower cylinder, giving 3.2 to 4.5 m2 of cooling surface on the 60 BBL and 5.0 to 6.5 m2 on the 90 BBL, depending on your glycol supply temperature and how quickly you need to pull a batch from 68 F down to 34 F.

Interior welds are ground flush and passivated. Wetted surfaces finish at Ra 0.8 micron or better; mirror polish is available if you package straight off the tank. Every jacket is hydro-tested at 1.5 times working pressure before crating, and vessels ship with CE/PED or ASME certification depending on destination.

Tanks are rated 15 psi working pressure with the relief valve set to match. Oversizing that valve is a common mistake; a 90 BBL vessel venting through too large a PRV bleeds more CO2 during spunding than necessary.

Questions We Get Before Quote

Glycol on the cone, or cylinder only? Cone jacketing is what lets you crash and hold without stratifying. For lagers and cold-crash-heavy schedules, we jacket both.

Can it carbonate? Yes. With a 15 psi rating and spunding valve, natural carbonation is realistic for most ales.

How is CIP handled? A top-mounted rotary spray ball plus a dedicated CIP return line. Keep CIP and product lines separate and verify 1.5 to 2 bar supply pressure at the ball.

Small craft versus commercial? Small rooms usually need the 60 BBL with a tighter footprint; packaging-focused plants pick 90 BBL to reduce tank count and labor per barrel.

Tell us your batch size, beer type, number of fermentation tanks and available space. We can recommend the tank volume, cooling area and configuration for your brewery.

Customer Review

We have been using this still for a few batches now making whiskey, gin and a few other spirits and we are very happy with the results so far. The gear works well and gives good control during distillation. The spirit comes out clean and consistent from batch to batch and we have gotten the flavor profile we were looking for. It has also been easy to operate and maintain. It has been a great addition to our distillery and I’d definitely recommend it to other craft distillers looking for reliable equipment.”
