What a 7000 L Fermenter Is Really For

Most breweries move to this size when 20–40 HL vessels start limiting the schedule. A 70 HL tank lets you run fewer, larger brews per week and still keep the cellar flexible for lagers that need three weeks of cold conditioning.

One detail worth sorting out early: 7000 L is roughly 60 US barrels, not 70. If your project documents say 70 BBL, check whether that figure came from UK barrels or from a supplier rounding up. Getting the real working volume agreed before fabrication saves a lot of awkward conversations later.

Fabrication and Materials

We form the shell from 3 mm SUS304 plate and the cone from 4 mm, since the cone carries the full hydrostatic load when the tank is filled. Interior surfaces are 2B mill finish as standard; dairy-grade polish to Ra ≤ 0.8 µm is available when you brew sours or fruit beers that demand stricter cleaning. Every longitudinal and circumferential weld is TIG welded, then ground, pickled and passivated. We pressure-test each jacket and the inner vessel before the insulation goes on.

SUS316L is the right call when your water is high in chlorides or your CIP program runs aggressive acid cycles. For standard ales and lagers on municipal water, 304 holds up well and costs less.

Cooling, Pressure and Cone Geometry

Dimple jackets on the cone and lower cylinder run glycol at around −4 °C, split into two or three zones so you can crash the cone without over-chilling the whole body. Design pressure is 3 bar; working pressure sits at 1.5–2 bar for carbonation and closed transfers, with a pressure relief valve and a separate vacuum relief. A 60° cone suits standard yeast cropping, while 70° helps when you dry hop heavily and need the hops to drop cleanly.

FAQ

How do I connect CIP and glycol? We supply a port map with the tank. CIP runs through the spray ball at low pressure; glycol in and out are marked on the jacket inlets so your contractor can pipe without guesswork.

Can one tank handle both ale and lager? Yes, if the jacket area is sized for the fastest crash you plan. Tell us your cooling target in hours, not just the temperature.

Do I need a separate bright beer tank? At this volume, most breweries carbonate in the fermenter for draft and use a BBT only for packaging runs.

Tell us your batch size, beer type, number of fermentation tanks and available space. We can recommend the tank volume, cooling area and configuration for your brewery.

Customer Review

We have been using this still for a few batches now making whiskey, gin and a few other spirits and we are very happy with the results so far. The gear works well and gives good control during distillation. The spirit comes out clean and consistent from batch to batch and we have gotten the flavor profile we were looking for. It has also been easy to operate and maintain. It has been a great addition to our distillery and I’d definitely recommend it to other craft distillers looking for reliable equipment.”
