Description
8BBL Conical Fermenter with Welded Side Cooling Jacket
Most breweries ordering an 8BBL conical fermenter are stepping out of pilot brewing. At 8 barrels net (about 936 L), one batch fills roughly 16 half-barrel kegs — enough to keep a taproom pouring with a few steady accounts, small enough to fit under a 3.2 m ceiling and run on a 3–5 hp glycol chiller.
We build the tank as a vertical cylinder with a dished top and a 60° cone. That angle matters: shallower cones hold yeast on the slope and drain slowly, steeper ones add height you may not have. Shell and cone are 3 mm SUS304. We move to 316L when the water report shows elevated chlorides or the brewery runs a lot of kettle sours — pitting shows up at the weld toes first. Welds are TIG with argon purge on the product side, ground flush, pickled and passivated. Interior finish is Ra ≤ 0.6 µm; exterior is 2B or mirror polish depending on where the tank will sit.
The side cooling jacket is welded to the shell, not strapped on. Welded jackets transfer heat better and last longer, but they warp quickly if the welder moves too fast, so every jacket is pressure-tested at 1.5× working pressure before shipment. Standard working pressure is 15 psi (1 bar), with 30 psi available for breweries that spund or carbonate in the tank. Set the relief valve to the tank\’s design pressure, not the compressor\’s output — that mix-up is common and costly.
A rotating spray ball on a 1.5\” CIP arm handles cleaning, with the cone drain and racking arm positioned so nothing pools. All product ports are tri-clamp.

Common questions
Is a cone jacket necessary on top of the side jacket? For ales, usually not. Lagers fermented cold hold temperature more evenly with a jacketed cone; without it the cone runs a few degrees warmer and the diacetyl rest takes longer.
What chiller size? Plan on roughly one ton of refrigeration per 10 BBL when crashing from 68°F to 34°F in 24 hours.
Can it double as a brite tank? At 30 psi working pressure, yes, with a carbonation stone on the racking arm port.

Customer Review
We have been using this still for a few batches now making whiskey, gin and a few other spirits and we are very happy with the results so far. The gear works well and gives good control during distillation. The spirit comes out clean and consistent from batch to batch and we have gotten the flavor profile we were looking for. It has also been easy to operate and maintain. It has been a great addition to our distillery and I’d definitely recommend it to other craft distillers looking for reliable equipment.”
