Description

A conical fermenter does three jobs: hold wort, hold pressure, and pull heat out of an active fermentation. Sizing starts with batch volume plus 20-25% headspace for krausen. A 1000L brew day runs in a 1200-1500L tank, not a 1000L tank – that single error causes more blow-off loss than any other choice on the equipment list.

Materials and fabrication

SUS304 is our standard; we switch to 316L for sour programs, fruited beers, and sites with high-chloride water. Interior welds are argon-backed, ground, and passivated. Contact surfaces finish at Ra ≤0.8 µm, with 0.4 µm available for yeast propagation and pitching tanks. We build 60° cones as standard and 70-90° for dry-hopped or high-solids beers where the cone has to empty cleanly.

Jacket, pressure, and connections

Dimple or channel jackets cover the cone and lower cylinder. Glycol enters at the lowest jacket port and exits at the highest, which is the opposite of what many installers assume. Working pressure is 0.2-0.3 MPa; every tank is hydro-tested at 1.5x and fitted with a relief valve sized to the vessel, not to the compressor. Standard fittings: racking arm, sample valve, dry-hop port, CIP spray ball, blow-off arm, and 2 in. tri-clamp glycol in/out.

Typical specifications

Volume Cone Jacket Polish
200-500L 60° Cone + 1 zone Ra ≤0.8 µm
1000-2000L 60° Cone + 2 zones Ra ≤0.8 µm
3000-5000L 60-70° Cone + 3 zones Ra ≤0.8 µm

Questions we hear before quoting

Can one tank handle ale and lager? Yes, if the jacket has enough surface area for crash cooling. Lager fermentation at 10-12°C needs roughly 30% more cooling area than ale at 18-20°C.

Do I need a separate CIP tank? Not always, but the spray ball needs 1.5-2 bar at the nozzle. A small brewery pump often cannot deliver that through a long hose run.

Insulation? Recommended above 1000L in an unconditioned room; 50-80 mm PU with stainless cladding keeps the jacket from sweating.

Tell us your batch size, beer type, number of fermentation tanks and available space. We can recommend the tank volume, cooling area and configuration for your brewery.

Customer Review

We have been using this still for a few batches now making whiskey, gin and a few other spirits and we are very happy with the results so far. The gear works well and gives good control during distillation. The spirit comes out clean and consistent from batch to batch and we have gotten the flavor profile we were looking for. It has also been easy to operate and maintain. It has been a great addition to our distillery and I’d definitely recommend it to other craft distillers looking for reliable equipment.”
