600L Isobaric Jacketed Fermentation Tank — What It Does in a Real Brewery

A 600L isobaric jacketed tank sits in a practical middle ground. It is large enough to support a small commercial brewery running weekly batches, yet still manageable when floor space is tight. The isobaric design means the tank can hold pressure during fermentation, allowing you to carbonate in the vessel without transferring to a separate bright tank. For breweries producing ales, lagers, or specialty beers, that capability reduces handling and limits oxygen pickup.

We build these tanks with a dimpled cooling jacket on the side and cone. Glycol flows through the jacket to remove heat generated during active fermentation. Temperature control matters because yeast performance is sensitive; a few degrees of drift can shift ester profiles or stall a lager fermentation. The jacket is welded to the shell and tested for leaks before insulation is applied.

Materials, Welding, and Surface Finish

Most customers choose SUS304 for the inner shell and jacket. It handles typical brewery cleaning chemicals and is cost-effective. For breweries producing sour or highly acidic beers, 316L is the better choice because it resists chloride pitting. We weld with TIG under argon shielding and passivate welds afterward. The inner surface is pickled and passivated to restore the chromium oxide layer. If the tank will be used for yeast propagation or high-purity work, we can polish to a lower Ra.

Insulation is applied after pressure testing. We use polyurethane foam, typically 50–80mm thick, then wrap with a stainless outer shell. That combination limits condensation and keeps glycol demand predictable. The top manway, CIP spray ball, racking arm, and sample valve are positioned for access. Every fitting is sanitary clamped or flanged according to the connection schedule you approve.

Pressure, Safety, and CIP

The isobaric rating determines the relief valve setting. A 600L tank might be rated to 1.5 bar or 3 bar working pressure depending on the shell thickness and customer requirement. We do not ship a tank without a correctly sized pressure relief valve and gauge. The valve must be matched to the maximum allowable working pressure, not just the typical operating pressure. CIP is handled through a spray ball at the top; return flow exits at the bottom cone. For effective cleaning, the pump must deliver enough flow to rotate the spray ball and wet the entire inner surface.

Selection Notes for Buyers

Batch size and beer type drive the decision more than tank volume alone. A 600L tank is often used as a unitank for 4–6 hectoliter batches, but fill volume should leave headspace for krausen. Breweries with limited ceiling height may need a shorter, wider cone. Floor loading also matters when the tank is full. Before requesting a quote, prepare your batch size, beer style, number of tanks, available space, and glycol supply temperature.

Tell us your batch size, beer type, number of fermentation tanks and available space. We can recommend the tank volume, cooling area and configuration for your brewery.

Customer Review

We have been using this still for a few batches now making whiskey, gin and a few other spirits and we are very happy with the results so far. The gear works well and gives good control during distillation. The spirit comes out clean and consistent from batch to batch and we have gotten the flavor profile we were looking for. It has also been easy to operate and maintain. It has been a great addition to our distillery and I’d definitely recommend it to other craft distillers looking for reliable equipment.”
