500L Beer Fermentation Tank: What It Is and Who It\’s For
This 500L unit is a jacketed conical fermenter we build for small craft breweries, brewpubs, and pilot systems that need repeatable fermentation without tying up a full production line. It works well for ales, lagers, stouts, and most clean beer styles where you want tight control over temperature and yeast behavior.
Why Temperature Control Matters in Fermentation
Yeast does not ferment on a schedule; it responds to temperature. Off-flavors like diacetyl, acetaldehyde, and fusel alcohols often trace back to temperature swings during primary fermentation. A dimpled cooling jacket welded to the tank body gives you a dedicated surface for glycol or chilled water. On a 500L tank, we usually size the jacket to cover the cone and lower cylinder so you can crash cool without waiting overnight.
Material and Fabrication Details
We use 304 stainless steel for the product-contact surfaces because it handles the pH range of beer, most CIP chemicals, and repeated passivation without pitting. The inner shell is typically 3mm, outer shell 2mm, with a 100mm rock wool insulation layer to reduce heat loss. Welds are TIG, ground and polished to a sanitary finish. We do not use sealant in the product zone. All ports are welded or tri-clamp, and the manway gasket is food-grade EPDM or silicone.
Cooling Jacket, Pressure, and Safety
The jacket is rated for a working pressure that matches your glycol system, usually 0.3–0.5 MPa. The tank itself is designed for a top pressure of 0.2 MPa, with a mechanical pressure relief valve set accordingly. If you plan to carbonate in the tank, make sure the relief valve and fittings are rated for the carbonation pressure you want, not just fermentation pressure.
CIP and Piping Connections
A rotating spray ball sits at the top for CIP. The drainage path runs through the cone to a bottom outlet with a butterfly valve. We position the racking arm slightly above the yeast collection zone so you can pull clear beer without disturbing the trub. Glycol inlet and outlet are typically 1.5-inch tri-clamp; you can specify NPT or BSP if your chiller uses threaded connections.
Choosing Between 500L and Other Sizes
500L makes sense when your brew length is roughly 4–6 barrels and you want several tanks in parallel rather than one large vessel. If you are fermenting high-gravity beers or dry hopping heavily, consider going slightly larger to leave headspace. For brewpubs with limited floor space, vertical height and manway clearance matter as much as volume.

FAQ
Can I use this tank for lagering? Yes, with adequate jacket coverage and a chiller sized for the temperature pull-down. Lagers need more cooling capacity than ales.
Is 304 enough, or do I need 316L? For standard beer production, 304 is fine. 316L is better if you ferment sours or use aggressive chloride-based sanitizers.
How many tanks do I need? Match tank count to your brew frequency and turnaround time. If you brew twice a week with a 7-day fermentation, you need at least two tanks running in parallel.
Tell us your batch size, beer type, number of fermentation tanks and available space. We can recommend the tank volume, cooling area and configuration for your brewery.

We have been using this still for a few batches now making whiskey, gin and a few other spirits and we are very happy with the results so far. The gear works well and gives good control during distillation. The spirit comes out clean and consistent from batch to batch and we have gotten the flavor profile we were looking for. It has also been easy to operate and maintain. It has been a great addition to our distillery and I’d definitely recommend it to other craft distillers looking for reliable equipment.”
