What a 500L Copper Pot Still With Column Actually Does
We weld these 500-liter stills in our own shop, and the pot-to-column joint gets more attention than anything else on the rig. That\’s where most of the copper contact happens, and it\’s where a careless weld shows up in your spirit three months later. The column is modular — 4 to 8 bubble plates, plus a packed section if you want one — so the same vessel runs a wide-cut rum wash or a tighter whiskey hearts cut.
Where copper belongs
Copper in the pot, the plates, and the lyne arm does the sulfur stripping. The condenser shell can be stainless steel and nobody tastes the difference. Grain bills heavy on corn or rye benefit from copper above the plate stack, not below it.
Heating: the choice that drives everything else
Most 500L customers order electric when there\’s no boiler on site. Plan on a 60–80 kW load plus the panel and venting sorted before the container leaves. Steam coils cost more upfront and less per liter once you run four or more days a week. Nobody who bought steam has switched back to electric.

A 200L suits a taproom license, 300L fits a small farm distillery, and 1000L only pays off with steam and a forklift. Five hundred liters is the sweet spot for two to three barrels a week.
What we need before quoting
Send your wash volume per batch, target ABV, available heat source, ceiling height, and the widest door the unit has to pass through. Tell us if you need a gin basket or an agitator. Those answers move the price more than any discount we can give.
