Description
What a 1BBL or 2BBL brewhouse actually solves
Most requests we handle for small brewhouses come from a taproom that has outgrown bucket brewing but cannot justify a three-vessel steam plant with automation. A 1BBL or 2BBL system fits that gap. Our standard configuration is a two- or three-vessel set on a common skid: mash/lauter tun, kettle/whirlpool, and an optional hot liquor tank, laid out so one brewer can run a full turn without a second pair of hands.
Materials and fabrication
Product-contact surfaces are 304 stainless as standard. We switch to 316L when the kettle will see high-chloride water or aggressive caustic/acid CIP cycles. Shell thickness runs 2–3 mm depending on vessel diameter, with a 3 mm dished top. Welds are TIG with argon purge on the wetted side, then ground and pickled wherever the surface stays visible after installation. Interior finish is 2B mill or a 0.4–0.6 µm polish; exteriors are brushed. Every wort-path connection is tri-clamp — no threaded fittings.
Heat source matters more than most buyers expect. Electric immersion elements suit sites without a boiler; low-pressure steam at 0.5–1.5 bar works where a boiler already exists; direct fire stays the simplest option for gas-fired kettles. Dimple or half-pipe jackets are hydro-tested at 1.5× working pressure before shipment.
Where these systems run
- Brewpubs and taprooms producing 2–5 batches per week
- Pilot plants for recipe development before scaling up
- Contract brewing setups testing seasonal releases
- Training breweries and hospitality venues with in-house brewing

Questions we get before quoting
Can the same skid handle both 1BBL and 2BBL batches?
Yes, within limits. Lauter efficiency drops when the grain bed gets too shallow, so a 2BBL tun running a 1BBL batch needs a slower sparge. We size the false bottom and grant accordingly.
How is cleaning handled?
CIP is routed through the whirlpool port with a rotating spray ball; we specify pump flow and ball size so the whole interior sees coverage. Kettle boil-out is done separately with a caustic charge.
What utility data do we need from you?
Available floor space, ceiling height, water pressure, steam or gas availability, drainage position, and whether glycol will be shared with fermenters.
Tell us your batch size, beer type, number of fermentation tanks and available space. We can recommend the tank volume, cooling area and configuration for your brewery.

We have been using this still for a few batches now making whiskey, gin and a few other spirits and we are very happy with the results so far. The gear works well and gives good control during distillation. The spirit comes out clean and consistent from batch to batch and we have gotten the flavor profile we were looking for. It has also been easy to operate and maintain. It has been a great addition to our distillery and I’d definitely recommend it to other craft distillers looking for reliable equipment.”
