Description

1BBL Mini Brew Set for Recipe Development and Small-Batch Production

We build this 1BBL mini brew set for brewers who need to validate a recipe or run a pilot batch before committing to full-scale production. The system suits brewpubs, craft breweries testing seasonal releases, and beverage labs verifying formulation consistency. At this scale, the equipment must hold temperature precisely during mashing and allow repeatable results across batches—not just produce a single good beer.

The kettle and mash tun are fabricated from SUS304 stainless steel, with 2B mill finish on non-product surfaces and a pickled interior on the wort-contact side. Welds are full-penetration and ground flush at the mash screen interface to prevent grain entrapment. The lauter tun uses a false bottom with 0.7mm slots, and the grant assembly allows visual confirmation of runoff clarity without breaking the grain bed. For pilot systems, we typically specify a 1.5kW electric heating element with low-watt-density sheath to avoid scorching during step mashes.

Temperature control across the mash rests on a PID controller with a PT100 probe positioned at the kettle outlet, not the jacket inlet—this prevents overshoot when the mash is thick. The plate chiller and sanitary centrifugal pump are sized for 1BBL knockout in under 30 minutes at 18°C cooling water. All product-contact fittings are tri-clamp, and the wort lines are 1.5-inch sanitary tubing with a 1-inch CIP return.

Parameter Specification
Batch volume 1BBL (117L) finished beer
Mash tun 150L, SUS304, false bottom 0.7mm
Kettle 150L, electric 1.5kW standard
Heating option Direct steam or electric
Cooling Single-stage plate chiller, 316L plates
Control PID with PT100, manual valves

Frequently asked: Why not use a jacketed mash tun at this size? Jacketed tuns add cost and cleaning complexity. For 1BBL batches, a direct-fired or electric kettle with a separate unjacketed mash tun usually holds temperature well enough for a 60-minute rest if the tun is insulated. If your process requires multiple step mashes or high-adjunct grists, we would recommend a jacketed tun with a separate hot liquor tank instead.

For CIP, the pump and a 1.5-inch spray ball in the kettle cover handle cleaning of the kettle and chiller circuit. The mash tun is cleaned manually—there is no spray ball—because grain debris blocks small nozzles. This is a deliberate design choice. Customers sometimes request full CIP on the mash tun, and we push back: manual cleaning is faster and more reliable at this scale.

If you need to test dry-hopping regimens or fermentation profiles, pair the brew set with a 1BBL conical fermenter. The brew set alone does not include fermentation control. Temperature stability during fermentation matters more than kettle design for repeatability.

Tell us your batch size, beer type, number of fermentation tanks and available space. We can recommend the tank volume, cooling area and configuration for your brewery.

Customer Review

We have been using this still for a few batches now making whiskey, gin and a few other spirits and we are very happy with the results so far. The gear works well and gives good control during distillation. The spirit comes out clean and consistent from batch to batch and we have gotten the flavor profile we were looking for. It has also been easy to operate and maintain. It has been a great addition to our distillery and I’d definitely recommend it to other craft distillers looking for reliable equipment.”
