Description

2BBL Pressure Fermenter: What It Actually Does on the Brewery Floor

A 2BBL pressure fermenter is not just a scaled-up homebrew bucket. It\’s a vessel that lets you ferment under pressure, carbonate in place, and transfer isobarically without oxygen pickup. That last point matters more than most brewers realize until they taste oxidized beer from a batch that sat too long.

We build these tanks for small craft breweries, brewpubs, and pilot systems where consistency between batches is the priority. The conical bottom gives you yeast harvesting without dismantling the tank, and the pressure rating lets you spund or force carbonate in the same vessel.

Materials and Fabrication

SUS304 is standard. For breweries working with highly acidic or high-sulfur beers, we can specify 316L on request. The tank body is 3mm thick, with dished heads and a 60-degree cone. Interior welds are ground and polished to a 0.4–0.6 micron finish; exterior welds are passivated after fabrication. Every tank gets a hydrostatic test before it leaves the shop.

The cooling jacket is dimpled for even temperature distribution. We use a separate glycol jacket on the cone when customers are fermenting in warm rooms or need precise crash cooling. The jacket connections are 1.5-inch tri-clamp as standard.

Practical Details Engineers Ask About

  • Working pressure: 15 PSI standard, 30 PSI available for higher carbonation levels.
  • Safety valve: Adjustable PRV set at 1.5x working pressure. Not a suggestion—this is a requirement for any pressure vessel.
  • CIP: A rotating spray ball is installed in the top manway. We recommend 3–5 minutes of caustic circulation followed by an acid rinse.
  • Isobaric transfer: The racking arm and gas port let you push beer with CO2 without introducing oxygen.

FAQ

How do I choose between 2BBL and 3BBL? If you\’re packaging 1–2 kegs per batch and want room for yeast cropping, 2BBL works. Go 3BBL if you\’re doing back-to-back batches or want to blend.

Can I carbonate in this tank? Yes. That\’s the point of the pressure rating. Carbonate at 30 PSI for 48 hours at 34°F for typical ale carbonation.

What about cleaning? CIP with a spray ball, then sanitize with peracetic acid. The cone drain helps you flush trub without opening the tank.

Do I need a separate bright tank? Not necessarily. Many breweries use this as a unitank—ferment, carbonate, and serve from the same vessel.

Tell us your batch size, beer type, number of fermentation tanks and available space. We can recommend the tank volume, cooling area and configuration for your brewery.

Customer Review

We have been using this still for a few batches now making whiskey, gin and a few other spirits and we are very happy with the results so far. The gear works well and gives good control during distillation. The spirit comes out clean and consistent from batch to batch and we have gotten the flavor profile we were looking for. It has also been easy to operate and maintain. It has been a great addition to our distillery and I’d definitely recommend it to other craft distillers looking for reliable equipment.”
