Description

A 2000L conical fermenter and a 4000L jacketed unitank are the two sizes we quote most often for breweries stepping out of pilot batches and into a regular packaging schedule. Both are pressure vessels: dished top, 60-degree cone bottom, dimple or channel cooling jackets on the cone and cylinder, and a top manway sized so someone can actually climb in with a hose and a brush.

Vessel material is usually SUS304. We move to 316L when the beer is heavily dry-hopped, when the same tank will run sours, or when the CIP program uses aggressive caustic and acid cycles. Interior welds are ground flush and passivated. Product contact surfaces get a 0.4 to 0.6 micron mechanical polish; the exterior stays 2B or brushed. Each jacket section is pressure tested before insulation and cladding go on, because a leaking channel found after the outer shell is welded shut means cutting the tank open.

Cooling is zoned, normally one jacket on the cone and two or three on the cylinder, so a 4000L batch can be crashed without freezing the cone and stalling the yeast. Glycol connections are 1.5-inch or 2-inch tri-clamp, chosen by chiller capacity and pipe run length rather than by tank size.

Working pressure drives the design more than volume does. A unitank carbonating at 1.5 bar and a fermenter running at 0.2 bar are not the same vessel. Safety valve setting, gauge range, and shell thickness all follow the process pressure you specify, so give us that number first.

How do we size the cooling area? From your crash time, batch volume, and the coldest glycol your chiller can hold. A brewery crashing 4000L in 24 hours needs roughly double the jacket area of one that takes three days.

Can the tank carbonate? Yes, if it is ordered as a unitank with the correct pressure rating, a carbonation stone port, and a PRV set to your target. Retrofitting a fermenter later is not practical.

What about CIP and dry hopping? We place a rotating spray ball in the dome, add a dry hop port, and can fit a hop cannon flange on the 4000L if you are doing heavily hopped IPAs. Small brewpubs usually run a single pump and a portable CIP cart; larger plants tie into a fixed loop with separate caustic and acid tanks.

Tell us your batch size, beer type, number of fermentation tanks and available space. We can recommend the tank volume, cooling area and configuration for your brewery.

Customer Review

We have been using this still for a few batches now making whiskey, gin and a few other spirits and we are very happy with the results so far. The gear works well and gives good control during distillation. The spirit comes out clean and consistent from batch to batch and we have gotten the flavor profile we were looking for. It has also been easy to operate and maintain. It has been a great addition to our distillery and I’d definitely recommend it to other craft distillers looking for reliable equipment.”
