Description

Purpose of a 40HL four-vessel brewhouse

A 40HL brewhouse handles about 4,000 liters of hot wort per turn. The four-vessel layout, with mash tun, lauter tun, kettle, and whirlpool as separate vessels, is what European breweries typically specify when they need to decouple lautering from boiling. The gain is schedule flexibility: you can lauter the next mash while the kettle is still boiling, which matters once you brew more than two turns a day.

Single-infusion programs with well-modified malt work fine here. If your grist carries a high share of raw wheat, oats, or undermodified malt, tell us before the kettle size is fixed; a cereal cooker or a longer mash rest schedule changes the vessel geometry and the steam load.

Fabrication and materials

We build vessels in SUS304 as standard. SUS316L is used for the kettle and hot-side piping when chloride levels in the water or cleaning chemicals are a concern. Interior welds are ground and pickled, with a Ra ≤0.8 µm finish on product-contact surfaces; exterior is brushed. Dimple jackets are on the kettle and, where specified, on the mash tun. Steam is the usual heating medium, though electric or direct-fired options exist for sites without a boiler.

Every vessel carries a CIP spray ball, a 360° spray pattern sized to the tank diameter, plus dedicated CIP return lines so cleaning solution does not run back through the wort path. Sight glasses, racking arms, and calibrated volume markings are positioned for the operator standing on the brew deck, not for the drawing.

Frequently asked questions

Do we need four vessels instead of two? Only if brew frequency or decoction-style programs justify it. A two-vessel mash/lauter tun plus kettle/whirlpool combination covers most 40HL output levels at lower capital cost and less floor space.

How much floor space should we reserve? Plan roughly 12 × 8 m for the vessel train, platform, heat exchanger, and pump skid, plus clearance for grain delivery.

Can the brewhouse feed existing fermenters? Yes, provided we know your wort main diameter and the height of the fermentation cellar; the transfer pump and piping are sized to that.

Tell us your batch size, beer type, number of fermentation tanks and available space. We can recommend the tank volume, cooling area and configuration for your brewery.

Customer Review

We have been using this still for a few batches now making whiskey, gin and a few other spirits and we are very happy with the results so far. The gear works well and gives good control during distillation. The spirit comes out clean and consistent from batch to batch and we have gotten the flavor profile we were looking for. It has also been easy to operate and maintain. It has been a great addition to our distillery and I’d definitely recommend it to other craft distillers looking for reliable equipment.”
