Conical Beer Fermentation Tank 500L to 20BBL Brewery Fermenter Price range: $3,766.70 through $8,789.12

Description

A 500L conical fermenter sits in an awkward spot in the size range. It is too large for a pilot system and too small for a regional brewery running 20bbl batches. Most of the units we build at this volume go to brewpubs doing 3–4bbl turns, contract producers testing a recipe before scaling, and taprooms that need more tank space without adding a second brewhouse.

Why the side jacket matters more than the cone

Everyone asks about the cone first. Fair enough, the conical bottom lets you drop yeast and trub without racking the whole tank. But for a 500L unit, temperature control is what actually decides beer quality. A side cooling jacket covering the cylindrical body gives you a larger heat transfer surface than a cone-only jacket, which means faster crash cooling and tighter control during active fermentation. If your glycol loop runs at 28–30°F, a properly sized side jacket will pull 500L from 68°F to 40°F in roughly 8–12 hours, depending on ambient and whether the tank is insulated.

We weld the jacket as a dimple or pillow plate onto the body, then pressure test at 1.5x working pressure. Most failures we see in the field come from undersized jackets chasing high gravity wort in summer, not from material defects.

Material choices and where SUS304 stops being enough

SUS304 is the default for beer. It handles wort pH, standard CIP chemicals, and the thermal cycling of a working brewery. The question is when to step up to 316L. If you are fermenting sours, kettle sours with extended acid contact, or anything with high chloride exposure, 304 will pit. We have replaced enough 304 tanks on sour programs to say this plainly: pay for 316L up front if your process touches chloride or prolonged low pH.

Internal welds are ground and passivated. We do not skip passivation on the weld zones, since heat tint left in place becomes the first pitting site. Surface finish is 2B mill on the exterior and a mechanically polished interior, typically 180–320 grit depending on whether you prioritize cleanability or cost.

Working pressure and the safety valve

A 500L fermenter is usually rated for 15 psi working pressure, with a pressure relief valve set to protect the tank during closed transfer or spunding. Do not confuse the relief valve with a vacuum relief. If you crash cool with the tank sealed, the pressure drop pulls a vacuum and you can collapse the shell. Every tank we ship includes both.

Ports and real-world connections

A typical layout: racking arm, sample valve, CIP spray ball, dry hop port, thermowell, and a 1.5in or 2in bottom dump. We build the CIP arm and blow-off into the lid so the tank cleans in a single pass. Glycol inlets are usually 1/2in NPT, and we orient them toward your chiller so you are not running hose across the cellar floor.

Questions we get before quoting

Can I use one tank for both fermentation and bright beer? You can, but the side jacket and cone geometry are optimized for fermentation. Bright beer benefits from a more uniform cooling profile. If you are doing both, tell us and we adjust the jacket coverage.

How many tanks do I need for a brewpub? Rule of thumb is 1.5 to 2 fermenters per brew length for ales, closer to 3 for lagers with longer turnaround. Work backward from your weekly tap volume.

Does the 3-year warranty cover glycol leaks? It covers manufacturing defects including jacket welds. It does not cover freeze damage from a glycol loop that ran too cold or lost flow.

Tell us your batch size, beer type, number of fermentation tanks and available space. We can recommend the tank volume, cooling area and configuration for your brewery.

Customer Review

We have been using this still for a few batches now making whiskey, gin and a few other spirits and we are very happy with the results so far. The gear works well and gives good control during distillation. The spirit comes out clean and consistent from batch to batch and we have gotten the flavor profile we were looking for. It has also been easy to operate and maintain. It has been a great addition to our distillery and I’d definitely recommend it to other craft distillers looking for reliable equipment.”
